WMU Giving Day 2019: Support Extended University Programs Giving Initiatives

Join Extended University Programs in supporting #WMUGivingDay on Oct. 9, 2019!

Since 1903, Broncos have been helping fellow Broncos succeed at Western Michigan University. WMU Giving Day is a 24-hour fundraising opportunity for alumni, friends and community members to collectively elevate WMU to become the school of choice in Michigan by supporting philanthropic goals that impact students. It is an opportunity for any area of campus to spotlight their special projects and causes.

Extended University Programs giving initiatives

You can help lifelong learners at every stage by supporting these critical needs:

Hundreds of EUP students receive some sort of financial support from WMU, and much of that support comes from donor-generated giving. Scholarships make a big impact by:

  • Enabling students to stay in school.
  • Ensuring graduates are prepared for their careers.
  • Helping students incur less of a financial burden from student loan debt.
  • Giving students opportunities for enhanced experiences, such as study abroad.

AMP Lab @ WMU Community Programming

The Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (AMP) lab is a collaboration between students, West Michigan manufacturers, Grand Rapids Community College and Western Michigan University to identify strategic priorities and develop programs to cultivate the next generation of engineers, designers and educate the 21st century advanced manufacturing workforce.

The lab combines prototyping, training and small-scale manufacturing with the opportunity for individuals to earn college credits to be used toward a degree or certification. The facility includes 3D printers and scanners, a CAD/CAM lab, plasma cutter, laser cutter, welding station, metrology equipment and prototyping tools.

Unique to this environment is the absence of classrooms. Learning, instead, is embedded in hands-on STEM experiences including entrepreneurial partnership areas, design thinking areas, maker spaces, robotics, and small batch production facilities. These areas are prominently displayed to actively engage the community and promote the programs within.

Gifts to the AMP Lab @ WMU will have a significant impact on K-12 students in Grand Rapids, MI and surrounding Kent County, by providing financial assistance for disadvantage middle school and high school students to attend future AMP Camps @ WMU. The AMP Camps provide students with a hands-on experience in a maker’s space where manufacturing meets STEM disciplines to enhance human-based craftsmanship in an environment designed to be supportive, enriching and most importantly – fun!

Becoming a Bronco through WMU Collegiate Pathways, students generate a college transcript, gain access to many university services, gain free access to athletic events and receive regular guidance from a student success coach.

WMU Collegiate Pathways opens up high-level, research university classrooms to talented high school students no matter where they live. A gift to Collegiate Pathways at WMU will help minimize students’ out of pocket expenses, open up high-level, research university classrooms to talented high school students no matter here they live. Giving them a chance to earn college credit while in high school.

University Studies

Extended University Programs’ University Studies degree completion program is designed for contemporary students, take 100% of their classes online, work full or part-time - all while simultaneously juggling family responsibilities. These students want to pursue out of the classroom opportunities such as Study Abroad to sharpen their skills, enhance their careers and much more.

Despite recognizing the potential benefits of study abroad in their personal and professional lives, the overwhelming majority of WMU University Studies’ adult students are over-committed with their current work and personal responsibilities. They simply can’t take extended time off work to participate in a traditional study abroad opportunity that typically requires several weeks or even months.

In thinking about this dilemma of work/life balance as it relates to study abroad and the adult learner, the University Studies senior advisor, Jessica Parker, designed and will lead the condensed study abroad experience for adult learners in the University Studies program in July 2020. This is the first study abroad program of its kind at WMU.

Donations to the University Studies scholarship will assist our students to make the journey to Scotland for this once in a lifetime experience.

Giving Day donations support every aspect of operations of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at WMU and help keep costs low for our members as we work to create an intellectually stimulating and socially invigorating learning environment.

Gifts to support OLLI at WMU are tax-deductible and help ensure OLLI at WMU can continue offering affordable, lifelong learning opportunities for seasoned adults. Every gift, no matter the size, is an investment in the future of OLLI at WMU and helps us continue to build innovative and vibrant programs.

Course fees and membership dues cover approximately 60 percent of OLLI’s annual budget, therefore private support is crucial as we strive to sustain our programs well into the future. It also allows us to prioritize the development of services and programs that will enhance the infrastructure of OLLI and expand to a broader demographic in southwest Michigan.

Together, we can make a measurable difference in WMU students’ lives. All gifts, in some way, support student success and help Broncos graduate prepared for a career they will love.

On Oct. 9, make a gift of any amount by visiting givingday.wmualumni.org and designating your gift as you choose. Or, you can support an initiative of your choice.
