RIVERVIEW, Fla.,—Beginning this fall, Western Michigan University will offer a Master of Science in engineering management through WMU’s new Tampa Bay regional location in Riverview.

The 30-credit graduate program is a hybrid of regularly scheduled online instruction with face-to-face meetings three weekends per semester. Students can complete the degree in two years.

The master’s in engineering management has been developed to meet industry demands for professional leaders and decision-makers in manufacturing, process engineering and service operations.

“Career opportunities for engineers with both technical competence and managerial skills are rapidly growing. Market research has shown an increasing need for qualified people to lead engineering initiatives in Florida and the southern region,” said Dr. Houssam Toutanji, dean of WMU’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. “Our engineering management program addresses this need by developing highly skilled leaders who are able to effectively manage people, projects and resources.”

The engineering management courses will be taught by WMU’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences faculty, each having more than 20 years of experience.

“By enhancing individuals’ skills in technical engineering and systems management, this program bridges the gap between engineering and business,” said Dr. Dawn Gaymer, associate provost of WMU’s Extended University Programs. “In addition to adding new technical skills to their knowledge base, current engineers from around the state will develop critical leadership skills to better manage people, money and projects.”

Some course offerings include concepts and principles of engineering management, capital budgeting, project management and production and quality management.

Upon completion of the program, students will earn certifications from the American Society for Engineering Management, the Project Management Institute, and the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineering.

WMU's Department of Industrial and Entrepreneurial Engineering and Engineering Management is a registered education provider for the Project Management Institute.

WMU will waive the GRE requirement for individuals who have previously completed one of WMU’s undergraduate programs in:

  • industrial and manufacturing engineering,
  • industrial and entrepreneurial engineering and engineering management, or
  • engineering design, manufacturing and management systems.

WMU’s Tampa Bay regional location is located at 9445 Camden Field Pkwy, Riverview, Florida. More information about WMU’s Master of Science in engineering management can be found online at wmich.edu/extended/academics/engineering-management.
