Interior Design Technology Requirements

Interior Design is a professional program that requires specialized professional-level software. These technology requirements offer hardware that is certified to run this level of software.

Additionally, COVID-19 educational adaptations present challenges for students who do not have laptops or laptops able to run professional software. University students receive educational pricing on sophisticated workstations, software and additional accessories that will not only support students throughout the entire 4-year program, but will also support graduates in their professional practice.

Below is an outline of required hardware, software, insurance and accessories for entry into the Interior Design Program. We recommend purchasing your technology requirements online through WMU’s campus bookstore or through one of the education stores below:

16” 2.3GHz 8-Core Processor, 1TB Storage, AMD Radeon Pro 5500M*


16” 2.6GHz 6-Core Processor, 512GB Storage, AMD Radeon Pro 5300M*

*You will need to install Windows 10 on your Mac with Boot Camp Assistant. This will enable you to switch between macOS and Windows when restarting your Mac. Boot Camp Assistant comes built into the above laptops. You will need to purchase Windows 10 Pro separately (see software requirements). Multi-Core Intel Xeon, or i-Series processor or AMD equivalent with SSE2 technology. Highest affordable CPU speed rating recommended.

Memory 16 GB RAM
Video Display Resolutions Minimum: 1680 x 1050 with true color
Maximum: Ultra-High (4k) Definition Monitor
Hard Drive Disk Space 500 GB as a minimum (1 TB recommended)

Windows 10 Pro on a disk image (ISO) (free ISO download)

Required storage

It is necessary and critical for student success to adopt cloud-based file saving and management systems. This includes, but is not limited to Dropbox, OneDrive, GoogleDrive and Box.

Required accessories

External hard drive

External hard drive for local backups: 1 TB or larger in size.

NOTE: the external hard drive saves all softwares and software settings in addition to saving important files. Cloud-based storage only saves individual files and does not save software or computer settings.

USB flash drive

USB flash drive(s): 8 - 32 GB is sufficient.

Recommended accessories

  • External three button mouse
  • Security cable or lock for laptop
  • Protective case or backpack

Required insurance

Many options include 3-5 year warranties, however additional insurance is recommended as laptop repairs can be costly. Many systems have accidental insurance options. For example, Apple Systems offer AppleCare+ and Dell Systems have Pro Support with Accidental Coverage. Please make sure to include insurance or extended warranties to your hardware purchase.
