Dr. Majdi Maabreth

This photo shows Dr. Maabreth standing in front of a whiteboard in the front of a classroom. He is smiling and holding a marker pointing out the word Linear. On eat whiteboard is a coordinate graph plotting a large number of red and green dots that represent values for two different categories. There is a blue line that runs at about a forty-five degree angle from the center bisecting the upper right quadrant and the red dots are mostly above the line whereas the green dots fall primarily below the line. We are unable to see what the dots represent in this photograph as the legend for the graph is behind Dr. Maabreth.

Dr. Majdi Maabreh has always been good with computers ever since he was a young boy in his home country Jordan.

At an early age, he set goals to learn as much as he can and be one of the best in the industry. He earned a Bachelor’s in Computer Science and a Master’s in Computer Information Systems from Yarmouk University in Jordan. For his doctorate, he chose Western Michigan University because of the diversity of students and the diversity of research areas in computer science. He said he talked to Bronco alumni who encouraged him to choose WMU rather than other universities who were eager to admit him. He was also impressed that U.S. News & World Report consistently placed WMU among the nation’s top 100 public institutions.

Dr. Maabreth has an engaging smile and is wearing a dress shirt with a blue and white plaid pattern on it. Behind him his cubicle walls are filled with an assortment of papers containing schematic images and what look to be laminated name tags from professional conferences.

He earned his doctorate in Computer Science in April 2018 with a perfect GPA of 4.0. Among his achievements, his dissertation is made up of six published papers. His first publication, “A Parallel Peptide Indexer and Decoy Generator for Crux Tide using OpenMP” was nominated for the Best Paper Award at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, High Performance Computing & Simulation (HPCS) conference 2016, Austria. IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization. He was also the recipient of numerous IEEE conference travel grants and WMU scholarly awards.

Dr. Maabreth's presentation it titled: A Holistic Computational Approach to Boosting the Performance of Protein Search Engines. Below the title is written: Dissertation Defense Presentation Nov., 2017. Majdi Maabreh

These days, Dr. Maabreh is an assistant professor at Hashemite University in Jordan realizing his dream of teaching in his home country. The Bronco alum is now inspiring the next generation of students wanting to specialize in computing, data analysis and bioinformatics research.

Dr. Maabreh is grateful to his family for their support during his studies at WMU.
