Frequently Asked Questions (Current Students)

How many hours do I need to graduate?

Depends on your program: Ph.D. 75; M.A. (General Option or Public History) 33; M.A. (Thesis Option) 30; Graduate Certificate in Cultural and Environmental Heritage Management 15; Graduate Certificate 9; AGDP may only count up to 12 hours from B.A. toward M.A.

What process must I follow to graduate?

Consult the flowchart and checklist for your degree program, then consult the Graduate College and Registrar's websites for any new procedures to follow.

I'm considering a break in my education. Do I have to stay enrolled all the time?

The Graduate College and Registrar have rules about "continuous enrollment."

Are there time limits on completing my degree program?

Yes. The Graduate College restricts the amount of time you may take (M.A. 6 years, Ph.D. 7 years), though extensions may be granted.

I've heard that the Graduate College has special formatting requirements for theses and dissertations. True?

They do. That's why the deadline to submit your final version is a month before graduation. They have a specialist to check every page to make sure your final version meets their requirements. The Graduate College holds formatting workshops in fall and spring, where you can learn tips and tricks to your thesis or dissertation.
