Foundations is the guiding principle behind the activities and events Residence Life plans for students. It focuses on giving all students the “foundation” they need to be personally and academically successful while at Western Michigan University. To achieve that, building blocks are identified that translate into programming areas. Within each of the building blocks, hall staff creates programs that will meet their specific residents’ needs. The building blocks are:
- Transitions and safety
- Healthy choices, relationships and sexual health
- Academic success
- Wellness and diversity
- Career and finances
In addition to addressing the Foundations building blocks, staff also emphasizes building community. At least half of the activities they offer are intended to help students build a social network on the floor and in the hall, relieve a little stress, and experience all Western has to offer.
