New residents

New students and students currently living off campus.

  • Spring 2020: Sign up begins 10 a.m. EST Oct. 15, 2019.
  • Summer 2020: Sign up begins 10 a.m. EST Jan. 29, 2020.

Contracts are date, not time, stamped. Students who sign up at 11 p.m. have the same priority as students who sign up at 10 a.m. the same day.

Students returning to the residence halls for another year sign up starting in January. When you sign up depends on where you want to live. 

Housing contract

The housing contract is for a full academic year, meaning fall and spring semesters. Summer housing options are also available. Click here for a copy of the 2019-20 housing contract.

Please be aware that you are entering into a legally binding contract with the University. Upon signing this contract, you (and your parent(s) or guardian if you are under the legal age of 18) become responsible for all the terms and financial obligations of your contract until the end of the spring semester. Students who do not return spring semester due to graduation, student teaching, studying abroad or leaving the university are not financially responsible for spring semester.


In late May, students self-select their residence hall, room and meal plan for fall semester. Completing the housing application reserves a space and assigns you to a Room Selection Group. On May 10, we will email your WMU address with your assigned date to login and choose your room. Room Selection Groups are assigned based on the date your housing contract is completed.

Submit a cancellation request via the housing portal. Your request will be reviewed, and you will receive an email reply regarding your contract status. A cancellation fee may apply depending on when you cancel your contract and whether or not you are still attending Western Michigan University. New students who will not be attending WMU may cancel up to June 1 with no cancellation fee.
