Tornadoes sometimes occur in Michigan, typically during severe thunderstorms in early spring and summer. Notices about tornado activity are issued by area radio and television stations and weather websites.
Tornado watch—Watches are issued whenever conditions are favorable for severe weather to develop. Watches give you time to plan and prepare.
Tornado warning—Warnings are issued whenever tornados have been sighted or conditions are very favorable; seek shelter immediately.
