Wired connections on WMU's residential network greatly simplified
November 28, 2016
Effective Nov. 23, wired connections in WMU residence halls and apartments were simplified. There are no more weekly scans or weekly logins required. Once your device has been registered for use on ResNet, WMU's residential network, that registration will remain active for 180 days after it is no longer seen. For example if you leave in April, and return for fall semester, your device will not be required to register again. Using the wired connections gives you the fastest speeds.

WMU Wi-Fi connections changing June 6

Effective June 6, the WMU Wi-Fi SSID tsunami will change to WMU Open. Devices set to automatically connect to tsunami will need to be reconnected to the new SSID. Whenever possible, the WMU community is encouraged to connect to WMU Secure, our secure Wi-Fi network. IT not recommending WMU employees upgrade to Windows 10 at this time

Any time a new operating system comes out, there is a fair amount of testing that has to occur to assure that the upgrade will work with Banner and other enterprise systems in use on campus. This testing is occurring and an announcement will be made when it is concluded and the upgrade may take place.

Norton Mobile Security for Android devices

WMU Guest logins now available

Office 365 ProPlus now available to current students and employees

Currently enrolled students and currently employed faculty and staff may now obtain Office 365 ProPlus at no cost for personally owned devices. Office 365 offers both desk top and cloud services.

WMU is now a member of the eduroam secure wireless access service

Effective Sept. 1, all students, faculty and staff with personal websites on the homepages server will be required to use SFTP to transfer files. For most file transfer programs this should be a simple change from FTP to SFTP. FileZilla is provided as a secure client and is documented and supported by the Help Desk.

End of life scheduled for seldom used iTunes U at WMU

WMU is replacing the seldom used iTunes U at WMU with Techsmith Relay (formerly Camtasia Relay). The new service is fully integrated with Elearning making it easy for faculty to add videos to Elearning-based courses. Workshops and consultations are available.

Recommend BroncoNetID password change if used for eBay

Ebay announced a cyber attack that compromised their customer database. If you were using the same password for eBay as your Bronco NetID password, it is recommended that you change both passwords as soon as possible. Using your Bronco NetID password on other accounts leaves your personal data susceptible when or if the other account is hacked.

Microsoft announces Internet Explorer vulnerability

Microsoft is aware of limited, targeted attacks that attempt to exploit a vulnerability in Internet Explorer 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11. For now Information Technology is suggesting you use Chrome or Firefox.

Windows XP is no longer supported

As of April 8, 2014, Microsoft will no longer support and update Windows XP. Even though your Windows XP computer will continue to work, it could now become more vulnerable as security patches will no longer be available.

WMU has been seeing an increasing number of phishing attempts. Phishing is when an email appears to be from a valid source and attempts to get you to click a link. The messages are not valid and if you click the link, you may compromise your computer and the University's network.

Symantec Endpoint Protection upgraded for faculty and staff download

A new version has been installed for Windows XP, 7 and 8. Faculty and staff should login to and select campus (WMU computers or off-campus (home computers) and follow the instructions for downloading and installing. Questions should be referred to the departmental LAN manager. If no departmental LAN manager, contact the Help Desk at (269) 387-4357, option 1.

Secure Wi-Fi now available in some campus locations

WMU Secure is now available in some, not all, campus locations. Once you configure your device to use it, it will show up as a wireless option. Secure Wi-Fi means your transmissions will be automatically encrypted.
