WMU - Music Research Degree
Early Admission (AGDP)

Requirements for early admission to the Master of Arts in Music as part of WMU's AGDP:

  1. A minimum GPA of 3.0 based on at least 30 undergraduate credit hours earned at Western Michigan University.
  2. Have completed or will be completing 88 total undergraduate credit hours at the time of application.
  3. A minimum GPA of 3.25 in core lower-level music theory, history, and aural skills courses completed at the time of application, with no grade less than a ‘C’ at the 1000-level and no grade less than a ’B’ at the 2000-level. These courses include Mus 1600, 1610, 1620, 1630, 2590, 2600, 2610, 2700, and 2710. You may apply for provisional admission if you are in the final semester of completing these courses.
  4. A Personal Statement in which you discuss your reasons for choosing the program and your primary area of interest (e.g., history, theory, ethnomusicology, historical performance practice, music technology, etc.). Also, outline your career goals, and identify those skills and knowledge areas you feel you must develop in order to achieve these goals.
Applications may be submitted online using the form below. Applicants who are in the final semester of their lower-level academic core and/or completing 88 credit hours may apply, but must provide verification of satisfactory completion before they will be permitted to register for graduate-level courses. In other words, most students apply in the Spring semester of their Sophomore year and are eligible to start taking graduate courses the following Fall semester provided they have completed 88 credits by that time. School of Music policy does not restrict AGDP students to only one calendar year between initial enrollment in the AGDP and completion of the baccalaureate degree. Normal application deadlines are Feb. 15 (to begin coursework in Fall) or Oct. 15 (to begin coursework in Spring).

Please note that acceptance into AGDP status does not guarantee final admission into the Master of Arts degree program. Acceptance at this stage will allow you to enroll in graduate-level course work while completing your undergraduate degree. You will need to submit an additional application for approval to complete the MA-Music prior to your final year.
