3/13/2020: Message from the director regarding covid-19

Dear WMU School of Music community,

The School of Music, acting in compliance with the emergency declaration issued by Governor Whitmer and policies enacted by the University, has suspended, canceled, or postponed all events and concerts effective immediately through Friday, April 3. This includes all guest artist and faculty performances, student recitals, large student ensemble concerts, and festivals being held during that time period.

On March 11, WMU announced that all instruction would be delivered online beginning Monday, March 16, through Friday, April 3. During this time, all in-person instruction has been suspended. This time period may be reevaluated by the University on or before Friday, March 27. In addition, Governor Whitmer has called for the cancellation of all events with an anticipated attendance of over 100 people. Because we cannot predict attendance numbers we have canceled these events out of an abundance of precaution to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

These cancellations have not come lightly, and represent a loss both educationally and financially. Investments have been made that cannot be recouped at this time, and students will no longer receive the performing and learning experiences originally intended. However, the health and safety of our students and patrons is our utmost priority.

Ticket holders for these School of Music events may request refunds, or donate their tickets back to the School of Music and receive a tax deduction for the total ticket value. To request a refund or donate the value of your ticket, please contact the Miller Auditorium box office at (269) 387-2300.

WMU provides daily updates to the situation at wmich.edu/covid-19. Please visit this website for ongoing updates about the University's response and wmich.edu/music/events for updates regarding School of Music events. We deeply admire the determination of our students, faculty, and staff, the collaboration and support of our patrons, and the understanding, flexibility, and solidarity of our entire community at this time.

Sincerely,

Brad Wong, Director
