Bio:

Dr. David Reinhold is an associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and associate provost for Assessment and Undergraduate Studies at Western Michigan University.

Reinhold's research involves two basic areas in the field of cancer research:

  • Investigating the biochemical mechanisms of tumor formation. The laboratory examines normal human fibroblasts and human fibrosarcoma cells (tumor cells of fibroblastic origin) and looks at various biochemical pathways to determine the differences that exist between these two types of cells.
  • Study of the potential role of certain metals (cadmium, chromium, and nickel) in the transformation of human cells to tumor cells. Specifically, Reinhold is trying to determine if these metals affect the mutagenic rate of known carcinogens such as benzo [a] pyrene diol-epoxide (BPCE).

These projects are funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Pardee Foundation.
