Master of Arts in Teaching: Teaching Chinese as a Second Language

The MAT Chinese program will not enroll students beginning from Fall 2021.

Program Description

Within the online application system, applicants must provide general information (including educational history details), as well as the following specific program requirements. Applicants must also request official transcripts, and any required graduate test and/or language proficiency official scores, be sent to WMU.

On-going. Applicants will be accepted for fall, spring and summer semester.

Admission Requirements

Academic Background
Applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree with a major in Chinese International Education (or equivalent).
Applicants must also possess a grade point average of 3.0, or higher, on a 4-point scale (A = 4.0).

Graduate test / Language Proficiency

  • Applicants must also attain a TOEFL score of of 80 iBT or IELTS score 6.5. 
  • Please scan and upload a copy of your test results within the "Other Program Materials" section of the online application. In addition, when you take the tests, please arrange to have your official scores sent to WMU. Institutional code is 1902.

Recommendations
This program requires three letters of recommendation. Please send email requests for such recommendations from within the online system.

Written statement
Please prepare a statement which covers the following information, and attach it within the online application:
Provide a concise written "statement of purpose" (250 words or less) indicating your reason for seeking admission to the program and what you hope to accomplish during the program of study.

Previous written work
This program does not require any previous written work be submitted.

Program Requirements

  • Passage of the Michigan’s Professional Readiness Exam (or state-approved equivalent test) is required for admission to the program. Information about this test may be found at: nesinc.com. The basic skills examination scores can be submitted during the first and second semester.
