SRC COVID-19 Modifications

The Student Recreation Center at Western Michigan University has made extensive modifications to spaces throughout the facility due to COVID-19. Some of these changes include decreased capacities, closed areas of the facilities, relocated equipment, and limitations on activities.

Changes effective Sat., Jan. 16

Due to the MDHHS Emergency Order issued on Wednesday, Jan. 13, the SRC is able to make some adjustments to its operations. 

  • In-person fitness classes resume on Tuesday, Jan. 19.
  • Racquet sports (tennis, badminton, pickleball, racquetball) and 4 player volleyball may resume.
  • Weight room capacity will be increased to 40 (increased from the current 30). Some machines will be brought back online as long as we are able to maintain a minimum of 6 feet of social distancing.
  • Competitive contact sports (soccer, futsal, basketball, etc.) are still not allowed under the current order. Activities associated with basketball and soccer are still limited to non-contact, single person activities.

The following areas are closed until further notice:

  • SRC pool and sauna
  • Climbing wall
  • Intramural sports office
  • Student Recreation Center
    • Overall building capacity limited to 500.
    • Shortened hours of operation.
    • Everyone entering the control space must swipe their Bronco ID, show their green Sindecuse badge, and wear a face covering (mask).
    • Masks must be worn at all times inside the facility.
    • All patrons must swipe their id when exiting the building for contact tracing purposes.
    • Patrons must bring their own equipment for open recreation, except for those items noted in the "Equipment Rental" section.
    • No guest passes. Access to the building will be limited to anyone with a membership.
    • Students that were not charged an enrollment fee can purchase an $8 access pass or purchase a semester membership.
    • No family hours until further notice.
    • SRC staff reserves the right to alter available activities due to patrons failing to comply with policies and procedures.
  • Weight Room
    • Room capacity is 30.
    • Machines have been spaced out to encourage and accommodate social distancing.
    • Patrons should clean machines before and after use.
    • One door is established as enter only (closest to the Towel Tracker machine and turnstiles) and the other is designated as exit only (closest to the locker rooms).
    • If the weight room is at capacity, spots have been placed on the floor indicating where to wait in line to access the weight room.
    • 30 minute limit on all cardio equipment.
    • Blue boxes have been placed on the floor to encourage social distancing.
  • 1st Floor Gym
    • Gym capacity is 100.
    • No competitive basketball or volleyball allowed due to MDHHS emergency order that went into effect on 11/18. Only practice shooting is allowed for basketball.
    • Players must bring their own basketball or volleyball. These items are not available for check-out.
    • SRC staff reserves the right to discontinue activities if patrons are not complying with policies.
  • Locker Rooms
    • Room capacity varies and is posted outside each locker room.
    • Private showers available for use.
    • Locker rooms may be closed temporarily between 2 and 3 p.m. for cleaning.
    • Patrons must wear a mask at all times, except when showering.
  • 3rd Floor Gym
    • Gym capacity is 100.
    • No basketball is allowed at this time. Activity in this space is limited to volleyball, racquet sports, and general recreation.
    • Volleyball is limited to 4v4 as long as 6-foot social distancing can be maintained.
  • South Multipurpose Gym (Cardio Area)
    • Room capacity is 25.
    • Cardio machines have been spaced out to accommodate social distancing.
    • Please clean equipment before and after use.
    • 30-minute time limit on all equipment.
  • North Multipurpose Gym
    • Room capacity is 25.
    • No badminton or pickleball is allowed at this time.
    • Only individual activities may take place in the multipurpose gym until the current MDHHS emergency order expires.
  • Indoor Tennis Courts
    • Room capacity is 100.
    • Activity in this area limited to individual activities.
    • Tennis is not allowed until the current MDHHS emergency order expires.
    • No open rec competitive soccer allowed due to social distancing requirements.
  • Racquetball & Squash Courts
    • Each court has a maximum capacity of 1.
    • No multiplayer activities allowed in racquetball and squash courts until the most recent MDHHS emergency order expires.
    • Courts can be reserved for one hour at a time by calling our service desk at (269) 387-4732.
  • F45 Studio (Classes resume Tuesday, Jan. 19)
    • Studio capacity is limited to 11 (9 participants and 2 instructors).
    • Studio may only be used for F45 classes.
    • Visit the F45 page for information regarding reservations and class schedule.
  • Aerobics Studio (In person classes resume on Tuesday, Jan. 19)
    • Studio capacity is limited to 30.
    • Studio may only be used for academic classes, SRC group fitness classes, or private rentals.
    • Group fitness classes have a capacity of 20.
    • In-person class spaces are available on a first come, first serve basis.

  • CycleFit Studio (No classes scheduled)
    • Studio capacity is limited to 11 (10 participants and 1 instructor).
    • Studio may only be used for cyclefit classes.
    • Reservations for cyclefit classes can be made on ExperienceWMU.
