Limited Submission Opportunities

Funding agencies often limit the number of proposals an institution is allowed to submit to a particular program. The Office of the Vice President for Research highlights current limited submission opportunities and outlines Western Michigan University’s procedures for managing agency-imposed limits on submissions.

Current limited submission opportunities 

NSF Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM)—National Science Foundation 17-527
Application deadline:  notify OVPR of interest by Nov. 15, white papers due Dec. 6 if needed, OVPR decision by Dec. 20, full proposal due last Wednesday in March annually.
Limit: one proposal (either as a single institution or as subawardee or a member of a Collaborative Research project) from each constituent school or college that awards degrees in an eligible field.

NINDS Neuroscience Development for Advancing the Careers of a Diverse Research Workforce (R25)—National Institutes of Health 17-312
Application deadline:  notify OVPR of interest by Apr. 30, white papers due June 21 if needed, OVPR decision by June 4, letter of intent due Aug. 25 annually.  
Limit: one proposal per institution.

Advancing Informal STEM Learning—National Science Foundation 17-573
Application deadline:  notify OVPR of interest by July 31, white papers due Aug. 15 if needed, OVPR decision by Aug. 29, application due Nov. 7, 2018 or Nov. 6, 2019.  
Limit: three proposals per institution.

Elizabeth Munsterberg Koppitz Child Psychology Graduate Student Fellowship—American Psychological Foundation
Application deadline:  notify OVPR of interest by July 18, white papers due Aug. 8 if needed, OVPR decision by Aug. 29, application due Nov. 15.  
Limit: one proposal per institution.

National Science Foundation Research Traineeship (NRT) Program—National Science Foundation 18-507
Application deadline:  notify OVPR of interest by Aug. 9, white papers due Aug. 30 if needed, OVPR decision by Sept. 13, letter of intent due Dec. 6  annually. Full proposal due Feb. 6 annually. 
Limit: two proposal per institution.

NIH Director's Early Independence Award—National Institutes of Health 18-010
Application deadline:  notify OVPR of interest by May 1, white papers due May 28 if needed, OVPR decision by June 11, letter of intent due Aug. 27, full application due Sept. 27.  
Limit: two proposal per institution.

CISE Research Infrastructure—National Science Foundation 17-581
Application deadline:  notify OVPR of interest by July 11, white papers due Aug. 1 if needed, OVPR decision by Aug. 15, preliminary proposal due first Wednesday in Nov. annually. Full proposal due second Thursday in Jan. annually.

Postbaccalaureate Research Education Program—PREP (R25)—National Institutes of Health 17-051
Application deadline:  notify OVPR of interest by Sept. 26, white papers due Oct. 17 if needed, OVPR decision by Oct. 31, application due Jan. 24, 2019.
Limit: one proposal per institution.

Research Experiences for Teachers in Engineering and Computer Science Supplements and Sites—National Science Foundation. Proposal must have a full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty appointment within a College/Department of Engineering or Engineering Technology or a College/Department of Computer and/or Information Science. The PI must be a full-time Engineering and/or Computer Science faculty member whose primary job responsibilities are research and teaching and not a faculty member who is involved in an administrative capacity such as a dean or outreach coordinator. Faculty members outside of CEAS that have an interest in this competition would need to partner with a CEAS faculty that can serve as the PI.
Application deadline:  notify OVPR of interest by May 2, white papers due May 23 if needed, OVPR decision by June 6, full proposal due thrid Wednesday in Sept. annually.
