Chris R. Surfus has Ph.D. and master’s degrees in public administration, master’s and bachelor’s degrees in business Administration, and a graduate certificate in nonprofit leadership. He has over a decade of nonprofit leadership experience including as president of the Michigan Capital Area Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) and vice chair of ASPA’s LGBT Advocacy Alliance. He has consulted with several nonprofit organizations in West Michigan and advised municipal governments on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Having served as a postdoctoral research associate at the University of New Hampshire’s Institute on Disability during 2021-2022, he has an ongoing program of research, publications and presentations focusing on disability, LGBTQ+, and social equity issues.
