Welcome from the program host

The Department of Teaching, Learning and Educational Studies in the College of Education and Human Development will partner with the Kalamazoo Chinese Academy—KCA—to host the 1st Michigan STARTALK Teacher and Student Academies on July 9-27, 2018, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. 

The teacher program is a 5-week teacher training with one-week (10 hours) asynchronous online training, a 3-week (120 hours) intensive face-to-face training and onsite practicum, and one-week (10 hours) online practicum during July 2-August 3, 2018. 

The student program will be running concurrently with the teacher program from July 9-August 3 (excluding weekends). The student program is a 4-week blended program that aims to provide a linguistically and culturally enriched learning experiences to 50 students in grades 6-12. The 3-week face-to-face program will occur between July 9-July 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the campus of Western Michigan University and one-week online learning will be conducted during July 30-August 3. The subsequent one-week online program requires students to devote at least two hours per day in learning the language. 

In this teacher and student combination program, participants will include collaborative teaching and learning for the two program participants. Teacher participants will have the opportunities to link theory to practice in a 4-week mentored practicum in an authentic 6-12 grades classroom. At the end of each lesson, teacher participants will receive individualized coaching and support from lead instructors and mentor teachers. Likewise, the student participants will have high-quality learning experience offered by both the instructors and teacher participants.
