Faculty and students are using VR in the classroom to explore its use in real applications. Here are some of the projects our faculty and students have worked on in virtual reality.
Nursing procedures simulation
As a test-bed for in-house virtual reality content development, Kevin Abbott and his students have been working with Susan Houtrouw in Nursing to create VR simulations of nursing procedures. Similar to what is currently being done with expensive medical manikins, these simulations would provide a very cost-effective alternative to manikins that can ultimately be experienced on any VR-equipped computer. Virtual reality will also allow for more detailed injuries such as lacerations and burns. Current scenarios being developed include intravenous blood transfusion, main line dressing replacement, and tracheostomy cleaning.
