Expert on Buddhism to speak (Sept. 25) An expert on Buddhism will present a lecture at Western Michigan University on Monday, Oct. 13. Dr. Robert H. Sharf, associate professor of Buddhist studies in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Michigan, will speak at 8 p.m. in the Lee Honors College. Three from Michigan House will talk about women in politics (Sept. 25) Two members of the Michigan House of Representatives and a House staff member will talk about the issues facing women in state politics during a public forum Monday, Oct. 6, at Western Michigan University. WMU Day Care Center available to broader community (Sept. 25) The Children's Place Day Care Center at Western Michigan University has gone public. Opened a year ago for children of WMU students, faculty and staff, the fully licensed facility is now accepting applications on a first-come, first-served basis from parents in the broader community. Family Festival Weekend set for Oct. 3-5 (Sept. 25) Spending quality time with the family will be high on the agenda for those attending Western Michigan University's annual Family Festival Friday through Sunday, Oct. 3-5. Scholar to explore humanitarian intervention (Sept. 25) "Humanitarian Intervention, Altruism and the Limits of Casuistry" is the title of a talk to be presented Thursday, Oct. 16, at Western Michigan University. Dr. Richard B. Miller, the Finkelstein Fellow and Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at Indiana University, will give the lecture at 7:30 p.m. in Room 1130 of Schneider Hall. Beauregard named athletic director (Sept. 24) Kathy B. Beauregard, senior associate director of intercollegiate athletics at Western Michigan University, has been appointed director of intercollegiate athletics, pending approval by the WMU Board of Trustees. New WMU faculty member wins technology's version of an Oscar (Sept. 23) Dr. George D. Guthrie, a new associate professor of geology at Western Michigan University, barely had time to unpack and begin teaching before it was time to pack his tuxedo and head for Chicago to accept the technical world's version of an Oscar or a Pulitzer Prize. WMU offers 'On-Site' admissions program (Sept. 23) High school seniors can apply for admission to Western Michigan University and find out 10 minutes later whether or not they're accepted during a program at WMU Saturday, Oct. 4. Two prominent executives receive WMU Distinguished Alumni Awards (Sept. 23) Two prominent Detroit executives are the 1997 recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award presented by the Western Michigan University Alumni Association. WMU Alumni Association elects officers and directors (Sept. 23) The Western Michigan University Alumni Association board of directors has elected new officers and directors for 1997-98. WMU students chosen for Walt Disney World college program (Sept. 23) Five Western Michigan University students have traveled to Florida to learn about the real world in the land of make-believe by participating in the Walt Disney World College Program. WMU leads effort to improve faculty preparation (Sept. 23) The National Communication Association has chosen Western Michigan University's Department of Communication to lead one of four national projects aimed at preparing future faculty. Most freshmen at WMU since 1989 (Sept. 19) Western Michigan University has 4,647 freshman students this fall, the largest number since 1989 and among the largest freshman classes in the state. That's an increase of 122 freshmen over last year's total of 4,525 students, and the third year that this figure has increased from the previous year. Board gives Haenicke 'outstanding evaluation' in performance review (Sept. 19) The Western Michigan University Board of Trustees Sept. 19 gave WMU President Diether H. Haenicke "an outstanding evaluation" in its annual review of his performance, citing more than a decade of achievement at WMU. Board selects search consultant (Sept. 19) Western Michigan University has retained the services of Korn/Ferry International as a consultant in the search for a new president to replace Dr. Diether H. Haenicke, who is stepping down as president next year to return to the faculty. New WMU fiscal year starts with $2.7 million in grants (Sept. 19) Western Michigan University kicked off the 1997-98 fiscal year with nearly $2.7 million in grants, the WMU Board of Trustees learned at its Sept. 19 meeting. Trustees hear two-month gift report (Sept. 19) More than $477,960 in cash gifts was donated to Western Michigan University during the initial two months of the 1997-98 fiscal year, according to a report presented to the WMU Board of Trustees at its Sept. 19 meeting. Board sets meeting dates for 1998 (Sept. 19) A schedule of 1998 meeting dates for the Western Michigan University Board of Trustees was approved Sept. 19. Board approves appointments (Sept. 19) The appointments of an associate dean and an assistant dean were approved Sept. 19 by the Western Michigan University Board of Trustees. Dr. David W. Parrott was named associate dean of students, effective July 7, 1997, and Dr. Julie A. Stoffels was named assistant dean and director of teacher education in the College of Education, effective Aug. 10, 1997. WMU establishes third twinning program in Asia (Sept. 18) Western Michigan University has launched its third "twinning program" with an institution in Asia. Curtis-Smith receives ASCAP award (Sept. 18) C. Curtis-Smith, professor of music at Western Michigan University, has been selected for the 20th time to receive an American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) Award. Week-long institute delves into one of today's hottest technologies (Sept. 18) A week-long training program delving into one of today's hottest high-technology planning tools will take place Oct. 20-24 at Western Michigan University. WMU to dedicate aviation facilities, board to meet in Battle Creek (Sept. 16) Western Michigan University will dedicate its new aviation facilities at the W.K. Kellogg Airport in Battle Creek Friday, Sept. 19. Preceding the dedication, the WMU Board of Trustees will conduct its regular meeting at the facilities. Kellogg chairman and CEO to kick off speaker series (Sept. 16) Arnold G. Langbo, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of the Kellogg Co. in Battle Creek, will kick off this year's Haworth College of Business Distinguished Speaker Series at Western Michigan University. WMU attorney selected for 10-month German study program (Sept. 16) Brian K. Kurzmann of Kalamazoo is one of a small group of young lawyers from the United States and abroad who have received a fellowship to participate in a 10-month study visit to Germany. ROTC program now available at WMU Center in Grand Rapids (Sept. 16) Western Michigan University is making it a little easier for some 40,000 college students in Grand Rapids and surrounding counties to obtain a commission in the U.S. Army. WMU and high schools team up for sportsmanship (Sept. 15) A total of 240 high school students from the Kalamazoo Valley Athletic Conference will gather on the Western Michigan University campus Friday, Sept. 19, for a summit to enhance sportsmanship. WMU courses prepare students for graduate school entrance exams (Sept. 11) The Office of Professional Programs and Conferences at Western Michigan University will offer special noncredit courses to help persons prepare for two graduate school entrance examinations, the Graduate Management Admissions Test and the Graduate Record Examination. Local teachers get federal funds for mathematics reform efforts (Sept. 11) Teachers at 15 Southwest Michigan high schools and their feeder middle schools will get federal assistance to implement a nationally recognized curriculum designed to revitalize the way students learn and use mathematics. Events planned in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 9) An address by a U.S. Department of Education official will highlight the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month at Western Michigan University Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. National math scholars visit WMU (Sept. 9) Two leading national scholars in mathematics and science will visit Western Michigan University this month as part of a larger effort to improve the success rate of underrepresented minority students in those disciplines.
