Board approves appointment

January 23, 1998

KALAMAZOO--The appointment of a new department chairperson was among the personnel action taken Jan. 23 by the Western Michigan University Board of Trustees.

Dr. Ajay K. Gupta was named chairperson of the Department of Computer Science, effective July 1, 1998. He will replace Dr. J. Donald Nelson, whose return to the faculty in that department, effective July 1, 1999, also was approved by the board. Nelson was granted a professional development leave from July 1, 1998, through June 30, 1999.

Gupta has been a WMU faculty member since 1989. He completed his undergraduate education in India, received a master's degree in mathematics from the University of Cincinnati and earned his master's and doctoral degrees in computer science from Purdue University.

The board also approved a sabbatical leave for Richard J. de Peaux, professor of art, for fall 1998 and fall 1999.

In addition, the trustees accepted the resignations of these faculty members: Dr. Charles R. Johnson, assistant professor of philosophy, effective Dec. 14, 1997; and Dr. Claudio D. Milman, associate professor of management, effective April 19, 1998.

The board also granted the retirements of these staff members, along with their years of service and effective dates: James D. Martin, service officer in the Department of Public Safety, 27-1/2 years, effective Jan. 30, 1998; and Judith J. Stuut, secretary in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, 17 years, effective Dec. 31, 1997.
