Bronco athletic mark to be updated

February 24, 1998

KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University's athletic logo will soon have a new look.

The current logo, created in 1988, is in the process of being enhanced and will be unveiled in early spring. The new mark is designed to have a wider appeal, be more marketable and enhance the image of the athletic department and University.

The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics, the Office of Marketing, Public Relations and Communications and the University Marketing Board have been working with SME Design of New York City on the redesign. SME has designed logos for more than 80 university and professional sports teams, including the Detroit Pistons, Jacksonville Jaguars and Pennsylvania State University.

"We have sought input from groups of students, alumni, coaches and administrators during the process. The new identity will have a broader appeal," said Matt Kurz, assistant vice president for external affairs and director of marketing, public relations and communications. "More emphasis will be placed on our Bronco nickname and our brown and gold colors will be enhanced."

Director of Athletics Kathy B. Beauregard agreed that the new logo will help build a stronger identity. "It represents strength, pride and determination. It will enhance the image of our department and University," she said.
