April 7, 1998

KALAMAZOO -- Award-winning writers from Kalamazoo to Slovenia are featured in the latest issue of "Third Coast," a literary magazine published by Western Michigan University's Department of English.

Featuring the work of established and emerging writers from around the world, the biannual, soft-cover journal is edited by graduate students in the master's and doctoral English programs.

This issue of "Third Coast" includes 31 poems, seven short stories and an interview with poet and teacher Richard Jones of DePaul University in Chicago. Jones is the editor of "Poetry East," a nationally recognized journal.

The poets featured in this issue include familiar names like Diane Seuss-Brakeman and Conrad Hilberry of Kalamazoo as well as Uros Zupan, a Slovene poet who has published three books of poems and has won Slovenia's National Book Award.

Fiction in the journal includes the work of Sara McAulay, Gian Lombardo and Emily Meier. McAulay is a widely published writer and has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. The cover art is by Sydnee Goldstein Peters, a Kalamazoo artist, who has used mixed drawing media.

"This issue continues to uphold the reputation we've established as a publication with an exceptionally high quality of writing, " says Kathleen McGookey managing editor of the latest edition.

Called "one of the best journals" by Alice B. Fogel, a nationally known poet from the University of New Hampshire, "Third Coast" is managed by an editorial board made up of graduate students in the department's creative writing program. Faculty members serve as advisory editors. Invitations to submit are include in each issue.

"Third Coast" costs $6 per issue and is available in Kalamazoo bookstores and cafes, including Athena Book Shop, Michigan News and John Rollins Books. Subscriptions also are available. Call the magazine's office at (616) 387-2675 for more information.
