Bronco sports summary

November 17, 1998

KALAMAZOO -- The football Broncos defeated Bowling Green, 56-27, on Saturday at Waldo Stadium. Western Michigan set a new average attendance record of nearly 21,866. Tim Lester completed 27 of 35 passes for 435 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Jake Moreland had six catches for 95 yards. Robert Sanford rushed 12 times for 65 yards and Darnell Fields carried 14 times for 58 yards.

Volleyball

The volleyball Broncos defeated Central Michigan 3-0 on Friday and lost to Ball State 3-1 on Saturday. WMU hopes of hosting a first-round MAC Tournament match as well as the team's NCAA Tournament hopes are now in serious jeopardy. The Broncos must defeat Bowling Green and Kent this week and Ohio must lose to Miami and to Northern Illinois. In all likelihood, the Broncos must advance to the MAC Tournament finals to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive.

Hockey

The hockey Broncos were not in action last week. This week the Broncos are at Notre Dame on Friday, Nov. 20, and host arch-rival Michigan State on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m. at Lawson Ice Arena.

Women's Basketball

The Bronco women's basketball team lost its season opener at nationally-ranked Vanderbilt, but rebounded the following night with a 12 point win at Tennessee Tech. On Sunday, Nov. 15, WMUwas within 3 points of No. 22 Vanderbilt at halftime before bowing 85-67. Shelsea Erving had five 3-pointers and scored 25 points. Star Harris had 18 points and 11 rebounds. On Monday, Nov. 16, WMU evened its season record at 1-1 with a 74-62 win at Tennessee Tech. Shelsea Erving again led the Broncos, with 19 points. Star Harris had her second double-double in a row with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Kelly DeLong scored all 18 of her points for WMU in the second half. The Broncos open Mid-American Conference play on Saturday, Nov. 20, at 3 p.m. in University Arena versus arch-rival Central Michigan.

Men's Basketball

The men's basketball team dropped a 2-point decision at Indiana State on Monday, Nov. 16. The Broncos lost their season opener 79-77. WMU's first home game is on Nov. 24 when the Broncos challenge Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
