Academic, staff appointments approved by trustees

KALAMAZOO -- The appointments of a new director of faculty collective bargaining and a new department chairperson were approved by the Western Michigan University Board of Trustees at its Jan. 22 meeting.

Dr. Chester B. Rogers was named director of faculty collective bargaining and contract administration, effective Jan. 4, 1999; and Cindee Q. Peterson was named chairperson of the Department of Occupational Therapy, effective July 1, 1999.

Rogers, a professor of political science and director of that program's graduate studies, replaces Dr. David O. Lyon who retired in December. Rogers joined WMU in 1966 and has held a variety of service positions in his department, the College of Arts and Sciences and the University. He served as the chairperson for the Department of Political Science from 1992 to 1997. In 1979, he took a two-year leave of absence from WMU to serve as an administrative assistant to Congressman Howard Wolpe. He also served as campaign manager during Wolpe's 1976 congressional race and has been active in a number of other political organizations.

Rogers earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Cincinnati in 1962 and 1963, respectively, and a doctoral degree from Northwestern University in 1967.

Peterson, an associate professor of occupational therapy at WMU since 1991, replaces Dr. Susan K. Meyers who resigned in June 1998. Dr. James A. Leja, professor of blind rehabilitation and associate dean of the College of Health and Human Services is currently serving as interim chairperson for the Department of Occupational Therapy.

Peterson has been a WMU faculty member since 1985. Prior to that she was the clinic coordinator for the Marion R. Spear Occupational Therapy Teaching Clinic at WMU and a staff occupational therapist for facilities in Kalamazoo and Coldwater, Mich.

She earned bachelor's and master's degrees from WMU in 1976 and 1981, respectively, and is currently a doctoral candidate at the Union Institute Graduate School in Cincinnati.

In other personnel action, the board also approved a return to the faculty for Dr. Joseph Kretovics, chairperson of the Department of Education and Professional Development, effective Jan. 3, 1999.
