Author to present reading

March 25, 1999

KALAMAZOO--Writer Patricia Hampl, author of the memoir, " A Romantic Education," will present a free, public reading from her work at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, in Room 3508 of Knauss Hall at Western Michigan University. A reception will follow on the 10th floor of Sprau Tower.

Hampl's reading is part of the Western Michigan University Reading Series sponsored by the Department of English.

Hampl, a 1990 MacArthur Fellow, is the author of two volumes of poetry and a growing volume of nonfiction prose. Her book, "A Romantic Education" is a coming-of-age story that explores the connections between her Czech-American heritage and Czechoslovakia in the wake of Soviet oppression. The Saint Paul, Minn., native's latest book, "Virgin Time," details a quest for contemporary spiritual significance in a historically evocative setting.
