Assistant admissions director Harris dies at age 40

March 8, 1999

KALAMAZOO -- Terri Sue Harris, WMU assistant director of admissions, died March 7. She was 40. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 9, at 2:30 p.m. at Kanley Chapel on the Western Michigan University campus.

Harris came to WMU as a residence hall director in 1984 and was named acting assistant director of residence hall life in 1989. Later that year, she became an assistant director of admissions. Among her responsibilities were recruiting students from high schools and community colleges in Southwest Michigan. She worked with the Alumni Ambassadors and parent orientation programs as well as coordinating the Gold Pride Preview, WMU's largest on-campus recruitment event. She also taught workshops on time management, conflict resolution and volunteer motivation and leadership.

A former executive board member of the Administrative Professional Association, she was active in the Michigan Association of College Admissions Counselors, the Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers and the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.

Harris earned a bachelor's degree in education at Central Michigan University and a master's degree in counselor education at Northern Illinois University. Survivors include a son, Benjamin.

Memorials may be made to the Terri Sue Harris Memorial Scholarship Fund at Western Michigan University through Betzler Funeral Home.
