Men's and Women's tennis teams win MAC championships

May 1, 1999

KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University's men's and women's tennis teams are both champions of the Mid-American Conference. The 1999 MAC titles mark the first time that WMU's men and women have each won a tennis championship in the same year.

The men's team won its first MAC championship in 18 years with a 4-2 win over Ball State on Saturday, May 1, at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The Broncos avenged their 4-1 loss to Ball State in last year's MAC title match. The WMU men's tennis team last won the MAC title in 1981. [More on men's championship.]

The women's team captured its fifth MAC championship under head coach Betsy Kuhle with a 4-2 win over Eastern Michigan University on Saturday, May 1, at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. The women also avenged a 1998 loss in the title match, having lost, 5-3, to EMU the previous season. The women have won conference crowns in 1999, 1997, 1995, 1990 and 1984.
