Foreign language students receive awards

Aug. 3, 1999

KALAMAZOO -- Forty-nine WMU students (listed below by hometown) were honored for achievement recently by WMU's Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. The awards presented included more than $39,000 in scholarships.

INDIANA

CROWN POINT
Dawn Pinkston, 1712 Wintergreen Court, received an $800 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue her studies in French.

KANSAS

OVERLAND PARK
Dylan Clark, 9650 W. 117 St., received a $2,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, awarded to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. To receive the award, Clark was required to have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.50 GPA in his Spanish major.

MICHIGAN

BATTLE CREEK
Heather Holcomb, 464 S. Moorland Drive, received the Special Achievement Award for excellence in French study.

BAY CITY
Marc Meisel, 4708 Maplewood Drive, received the Prix d'Honneur de l'Ambassadeur de France, an award given by the French Embassy to the outstanding student of French in the graduating class.

Sara Miller, 5030 South Two-Mile Road, received a $1,400
Ruth Y. Kirby Scholarship Award in Spanish, an award that provides financial assistance for Spanish majors and made possible through a donation by the late Kirby, who taught Spanish in the Kalamazoo community.

BRIGHTON
Rory Callendar, 4411 Andersen, received the $1,000 Hermann E. Rothfuss Award for Excellence in German, for demonstrating outstanding academic performance in the study of the German language.

CANTON
Cheryl Benko, 43768 Leeann Lane received a $2,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, awarded to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. To receive the award, Benko was required to have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.50 GPA in her French major.

Joshua Tolbert, 7710 Chichester, received the Premio Joan Coromines for exemplary academic achievement in the study of Spanish language and literature.

CARO
Megan Gruber, 118 Quinn, received a $2,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, awarded to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. To receive the award, Gruber was required to have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.50 GPA in her Spanish major.

CASSOPOLIS
Beth Hartman, 511 E. Water St., received the Preis der Bundesrepublik, an award given in recognition of outstanding work in the study of German.

CHELSEA
Elizabeth Bright, 235 Harrison St., received a $2,500 President's Award for Study Abroad, awarded to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. To receive the award, Bright was required to have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.75 GPA in her French major.

COLDWATER
Jessica Rieger, 141 East Garfield Road, received the John B. Dorstewitz Award in French for excellence in French study, named for a former WMU French major who died in a 1997 accident. Rieger also received a $2,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, awarded to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. To receive the award, Rieger was required to have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.50 GPA in her French major.

DANNSVILLE
Sarah Sheathelm, 3230 Sheathelm Road, received the Premio Jorge Luis Borges, awarded for demonstrating overall excellence in the study of the Spanish language.

FENTON
Meredith Cislo, 13048 Hillsbury, received a $1,400 Ruth Y. Kirby Scholarship Award in Spanish, an award that provides financial assistance for Spanish majors and made possible through a donation by the late Kirby, who taught Spanish in the Kalamazoo community.

GRAND RAPIDS
Kate McCarthy, 2045 Lamont, received a $1,400 Ruth Y. Kirby Scholarship Award in Spanish, an award that provides financial assistance for Spanish majors made possible through a donation by the late Kirby, who taught Spanish in the Kalamazoo community.

Deborah Zainea, 2855 Northville N.E., received a $1,400 Ruth Y. Kirby Scholarship Award in Spanish, an award that provides financial assistance for Spanish majors made possible through a donation by the late Kirby, who taught Spanish in the Kalamazoo community.

GRANDVILLE
Billie Sue Patrick, 2924 Baron Court, received the Premio Octavio Paz, for demonstrating overall excellence in the study of Spanish language and literature.

HAMILTON
Aaron Boesenecker, 3574 Walnut Park Drive, received the $600 Mathilde Steckelberg Scholarship in German, an award presented to language students demonstrating outstanding academic performance and potential.

IONIA
Jennifer Lemke, 1789 Bates Road, received the Sor Juana Inés de laCruz, awarded to recognize excellence in the study of Spanish language and literature.

LANSING
Melissa Cain, 5815 Cortina Trail, received a $2,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, awarded to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. To receive the award, Cain was required to have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.50 GPA in her German major.

Susan Cheyne, 516 Gettysburg Drive, received a $2,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, awarded to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. To receive the award, Cheyne was required to have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.50 GPA in her dual majors of French and German. Cheyne was also the recipient of the Mathilde Steckelberg Scholarship in French, a $600 award presented to language majors demonstrating outstanding academic performance and potential.

LUDINGTON
Rebecca Westphal, 5404 W. Heslund, received the Premio Alfonso X el Sabio, awarded to recognize overall excellence in the study of Spanish language and literature.

KALAMAZOO
Lindsay Baker, 8843 West R Ave., received the Margaret H. Brooks Award given to an exemplary student of French for continuing language studies.

Margaret Bildner, 134 Stirling, received the John B. Dorstewitz Award in French for excellence in French study named for a former WMU French major who died in a 1997 accident.

Matthew Gillis, 223 Elm St., received the $600 Mathilde Steckelberg Scholarship Award in Classics, awarded to a language student who demonstrates outstanding academic performance and potential.

Todd Graham, 523 W. South St., received the Excellence in Russian Award in recognition of academic achievement in the study of Russian.

Judith Krane-Calvert, 2216 S. Park St., received the $100 Eunice E. Kraft Award for Excellence in Latin, named for Eunice E. Kraft, WMU professor emeritus of Latin and 1918 alumna.

Colette Sgambati, 2723 S. Rose St., received a $2,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, awarded to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. To receive the award, Sgambati was required to have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.50 GPA in her French major.

MARTIN
Corey Thompson, 1282 111th Ave., received an $800 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue his studies in Spanish.

MIDLAND
Sara Grew, 2201 Wyllys Court, received the Premio Suzanne M. Wheatley, named in honor of a WMU Spanish major killed in a 1988 accident and awarded to a student on the basis of academic performance and an interest in traveling to Spain.

Kimberly Heffel, 5411 Wallbridge, received the Mathilde Steckelberg Scholarship in Spanish, a $600 award presented to language majors demonstrating outstanding academic performance and potential.

Amy Proskow, 208 W. Chapel Lane, received the Excellence in Italian Award in recognition of academic achievement in Italian.

MONROE
Ingo Kaufman, 1515 E. Hurd Road, received a $2,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, awarded to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. To receive the award, Kaufman was required to have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.50 GPA in her major.

NORTHVILLE
Amy Thelen, 1104 Springfield, received a $2,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, awarded to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. To receive the award, Thelen was required to have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.50 GPA in her French major.

NOVI
Bryan Hill, 24385 Kings Pointe St., received a $1,400 Ruth Y. Kirby Scholarship Award in Spanish, an award that provides financial assistance for Spanish majors and made possible through a donation by the late Kirby, who taught Spanish in the Kalamazoo community.

PLYMOUTH
Melissa Pavy, 14291 Northville Road, received the Excellence in Russian Award in recognition of academic achievement in the study of Russian.

PORTAGE
Erin Boes, 2321 Rosewood, received the Premio María Moliner, awarded for excellence in the study of Spanish language and literature.

Andrea Kotecki, 2049 E. Centre St., received a $1,400 Ruth Y. Kirby Scholarship Award in Spanish, an award that provides financial assistance for Spanish majors and made possible through a donation by the late Kirby, who taught Spanish in the Kalamazoo community.

Gordana Murphy, 11063 Meadow St., was named a Western Michigan University Presidential Scholar, a University distinction awarded to the foreign language student demonstrating the most outstanding classroom performance. Murphy also received the Frances E. Noble Prize for Excellence in French for having the highest grade point average in French among graduating French majors.

Amy Slagle, 5429 Meredith, received the Excellence in Russian Award for exemplary academic achievement in her study of Russian language.

RICHLAND
Brandon Doyle, 9181 Cotters Ridge Road, received the $100 Victor Coutant Award in Classics, awarded to an outstanding student in Latin or Greek.

ROMULUS
Kimberly Mientkiewicz, 37207 Menton, received a $2,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, awarded to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. To receive the award, Mientkiewicz was required to have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.50 GPA in her French major.

SPRING LAKE
Jason Schrier, 118 W. Exchange St., received a $1,400 Ruth Y. Kirby Scholarship Award in Spanish, an award that provides financial assistance for Spanish majors and made possible through a donation by the late Kirby, who taught Spanish in the Kalamazoo community.

TROY
Angelique Hughes, 1234 Player Drive, received an $800 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue her study in Spanish. Hughes also received the Premio Rosalía de Castro for demonstrating overall excellence in the study of Spanish language and literature.

Amanda Wartchow, 3804 Victoria Court, received the Premio Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, an award which recognizes overall excellence in the study of Spanish language and literature.

Stephanie Yount, 1655 Hallmark, received the Premio Antonio de Nebrija, an award which recognizes overall excellence in the study of Spanish language and literature.

WATERVLIET
Anne McGee, 3574 John Goff Road, received the $500 Herb B. Jones Scholarship in Spanish, a $500 award for demonstrating overall excellence in written and spoken Spanish.

PENNSYLVANIA

McMURRAY
Kendra Gates, 258 Gateshead Drive, received the Prix de l'Alliance Française, which recognizes student involvement in French activities.

WEST VIRGINIA

TORNADO
Tyler Sergent, 655 Falls Creek Road, received the Excellence in Italian Award for academic achievement in Italian.
