Floyd to speak to WMU and Sturgis High alums, Air Force society

Aug. 26, 1999

KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University President Elson S. Floyd will be the main speaker at a luncheon for Sturgis High School graduates, WMU alumni and others at the home of Maurice D. (Suds) Sumney in Schoolcraft Saturday, Sept. 11.

The luncheon, which begins at 11:30 a.m., is the first of three events that are co-sponsored by the Michigan state chapter of the Eighth Air Force Historical Society, graduates of Sturgis High School and WMU alumni from the Sturgis area.

After the luncheon, participants will convene at the Comstock VFW Post, located at 5990 East Michigan Ave., for what is billed as "A Bobby Sox Saturday Afternoon Matinee." The Otsego Jazz Band, an 18-piece jazz band that specializes in the music of Glen Miller, will perform.

After a buffet supper, participants will proceed to Waldo Stadium for WMU's CommUniverCity Night football game with Youngstown State University. The game begins at 6 p.m.

The annual gathering began as a reunion for members of the Class of 1941 from Sturgis High School, according to Sumney. Because of the large number of WMU alumni in the group, it also became an event focused on promoting WMU and Bronco athletics. This year, the Air Force group was added to the mix. Proceeds from this year's activities will go to the Christmas Fund of the Battle Creek VFW chapter and the Sturgis High School Scholarship Endowment Fund.

Costs are $7 for the luncheon, $15 for the matinee and $8 for the football game. Interested persons may send checks to Sumney at P.O. Box 2527, Kalamazoo, MI 49003, by Sept. 5. More information is available by calling him at (616) 679-4574.
