Golf team finishes strong in fall season

Oct. 20, 1999

INDIANAPOLIS -- Western Michigan placed third out of 11 teams with a school-record 647 at the Bulldog Invitational (Oct. 18-19) in Indianapolis. The third-place showing was Western's highest tournament finish in the program's two-year history.

Notre Dame captured team honors with a 623 followed by Xavier (642).

Bronco freshman Erica Bieniek shot a 151 to finish tied for third overall. Her five birdies were the most of the tournament (equaled by two others), while her final round score of even-par 71 was lowest among the field. Freshman Katie Yoder recorded a 160 to finish tied for sixth. Western's 13 birdies was second-best among the 11 teams.

The team has completed the fall portion of its 1999-2000 campaign and will concentrate on conditioning and weight training the next few months. Coach Cindy Trout's squad opens its spring season on Feb. 28-29 at the Edwin Watts Carolinas Collegiate Classic to be held in Pinehurst, N.C.
