Nov. 26, 1999

KALAMAZOO -- Three members of the Western Michigan University volleyball team were named to All-Mid-American Conference teams in voting conducted by league coaches.

Seniors Traci Morin and Mandy Whitfield were named to the first team while junior setter Jen Nowak was named to the honorable mention all-conference roster.

Morin was ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation in hitting percentage during the course of the year. She led the MAC in hitting in all matches with a .410 attack rate and in conference contests with a .426 hitting percentage. Morin's .346 career hitting percentage is the second-best in school history. The 1999 season saw the Bay City native become the first Bronco to lead the team in blocks in three consecutive seasons.

Whitfield has been a force for WMU since transferring from Kansas State in 1997. She blasted 415 kills (4.15 kpg.) this season to lead WMU. The Comstock, Mich., native ranked No. 5 in the league in kills in MAC matches (4.20 kpg.) and was sixth in the conference in kills in all matches (4.08 kpg.). Whitfield posted 16 double-doubles in 1999 to lead the Broncos. She also joined the 1,000-kill, 500 dig club at WMU this season. Whitfield recorded kill No. 1,000 Oct. 6 against Northern Illinois and made career dig No. 500 against Illinois-Chicago Sept. 11.

Nowak totaled 1,239 assists (13.32 apg.) in directing the high-powered WMU attack. She tied the school record for assist average in a season and helped the Broncos rank among national hitting percentage leaders most of the season. Nowak was No. 2 in the MAC in assists in both overall (13.33 apg.) and conference (13.90 apg.) matches and was MAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week Oct. 25. She was also ranked as high as No. 11 in the nation in assists during the season.
