KALAMAZOO -- Eighteen students received doctoral degrees from Western Michigan University at the end of fall session in December.
The students received doctor of education (Ed.D.) degrees in educational leadership; doctor of public administration (D.P.A.) degrees; and doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in five fields: counseling psychology, educational leadership, mathematics, psychology and science education.
Vivian Barnette of Sanford, N.C., earned a Ph.D. degree in counseling psychology. The title of her dissertation was "Minority and Majority Supervisees' in APA-Approved Counseling Psychology Programs Perceptions of Clinical Supervision." The daughter of James Dean and the late Inez Dean, she received a master's degree in North Carolina A&T State University and a bachelor's degree from Western Carolina University. She is a senior staff psychologist at the University of Oregon.
Joyce A. Brown of Battle Creek, Mich., earned a Ph.D. degree in educational leadership. The title of her dissertation was "Case Studies of Organizational Evaluation in Community Foundations." The daughter of Marbline Box, Rockford, Ill., she received both master's and bachelor's degrees from Bradley University. Brown is regional director for the Kellogg Youth Initiative Partnerships program at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
Shawn Eric Channell of San Diego, Calif., earned a Ph.D. degree in clinical psychology. The title of his dissertation was "Comparing Outcome of Residential and Intensive Outpatient Treatment Services for Chemical Dependence." The son of Ronald and Terri Channell, Clarksburg, W.Va., he received a master's degree from WMU and a bachelor's degree from West Virginia University.
David Edward Freed of Lansing, Mich., earned a D.P.A. degree in public administration. The title of his dissertation was "Implementing Organizational Change in a Public Agency."
Warren Charles Gregory of New Castle, Pa., earned a D.P.A. in public administration. The title of his dissertation was "Symbolic Politics: Government's War on the Working Class." The son of Stella Gregory and the late Warren Gregory Sr., he received both master's and bachelor's degrees from University of Detroit. He is a writer and has written more than 15 publications on public policy.
Roxana Marie Hopkins of Marshall, Mich., earned a D.P.A. degree in public administration. The title of her dissertation was "Site-Based Management and Student Achievement."
Andrew Charles Isola III of Allegan, Mich., earned a Ph.D. degree in science education. The title of his dissertation was "Students' Mental Models of Electricity in Simple DC Circuits." The son of Andrew and Yvonne Isola of Lexington, S.C., he received a master's degree from WMU and a bachelor's degree from Michigan Technological University. Isola is a science and mathematics teacher in Allegan High School.
Margo Adams Larsen of Grand Forks, N.D., earned a Ph.D. degree in psychology. The title of her dissertation was "Diagnostic Issues With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Conditional Probabilities and a Measure of Symptom Ratings."
Amy Lorraine McCarty of Comstock Park, Mich., earned a Ph.D. degree in psychology. The title of her dissertation was "A Comparison of the Effects of Temporal Requirement and Response Form on Retention, Equivalence and Endurance."
Ann M. McGrath of Cincinnati, earned a Ph.D. degree in psychology. The title of her dissertation was "The Validity of the ADHD Subscale of the NIMH DISC-IV." The daughter of Thomas J. McGrath of and Marianne A. McGrath. both of Leawood, Kan., she received a master's degree from WMU and a bachelor's degree from University of Kansas. She is a postdoctoral fellow at the Children's Hospital Medical Center.
Jeffrey A. McNeil of Mason, Mich., earned a Ph.D. degree in counseling psychology. The title of his dissertation was "Cognitive Components of Social Anxiety: A Comparison of Elderly and Young Adults." The son of Dr. John and Patricia NcNeil, he received a master's degree from Asbury Theological Seminary and a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University. McNeil is a captain in the U.S. Army and a division psychologist with the 82D Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, N.C.
Takanori Mita of Moorhead, Minn., earned a Ed.D. degree
in educational leadership. The title of his dissertation was "Japanese
Students' Perceived Need for Communicative English and Their Perceived
Proficiency Levels."
David Paul Moxley of Lathrup Village, Mich., earned a D.P.A.
degree in public administration. The title of his dissertation
was "Foundations of Board Development: Theory and Practice
in Community Service Organizations."
Johanna Eva Nilsson of Kansas City, Mo., earned a Ph.D. degree in counseling psychology. The title of her dissertation was "A Comparison of International and U.S. Students in APA-Accredited Programs: Acculturation, Counseling Self-Efficacy and Role Difficulties in Supervision."
Dianne Tracy Robinson of Ruston, La., earned a Ph.D., in counseling psychology. The title of her dissertation was "The Relationship Between Multicultural Counseling Competencies and Attitudes Toward African Americans Among White Female Graduate Students."
Mary Beth Short of Fargo, N.D., earned a Ph.D. degree in psychology. The title of her dissertation was "Evaluating the Effects of Positive Peer Reporting on Social Acceptance."
Karolyn Holmes Thompson of Winston-Salem, N.C., earned a Ph.D. degree in counseling psychology. The title of her dissertation was "Perceptions of the Divison of Labor Roles in Dual-Career Households of Married African American Couples." The daughter of Evelyn Holmes, 1435 Dellabrook Road, and the late Arthur Holmes, she received a master's degree from North Carolina A&T State University and a bachelor's degree from Winston-Salem State University.
Rebecca Kathleen Walker of Kalamazoo, earned a Ph.D. degree in mathematics. The title of her dissertation was "Students' Conceptions of Mathematics and the Transition From a Standards-Based Reform Curriculum to College Mathematics."
