Mernagh named volleyball assistant

Feb. 18, 2000

The Western Michigan University volleyball team has added a new assistant coach to its staff.

Annemarie Mernagh is the newest member of Bronco head coach Cathy George's staff. A native of Portage, Mich., and a 1991 graduate of Portage Northern, Mernagh graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1996 with a degree in history and English. She helped lead the Panthers to the Big East Tournament championship all four years of her career. Pittsburgh also reached the NCAA Tournament in each of Mernagh's four seasons and advanced to the second round her senior year.

Mernagh joins George and assistant coach Russ Carney on the WMU staff. Her duties will include recruiting, assisting at practice, team conditioning, film exchange, coordinating team travel plans, and her coaching duties during matches.

"It's a great opportunity," Mernagh said. "Everyone I've spoken to has had only good things to say about Cathy and Russ. I'm surrounded by people who do things right."

Following graduation, Mernagh served as head coach at Fox Chapel High School in Pittsburgh and was also coach of the Pittsburgh Nike League club team. She was an assistant coach at Portage Northern in 1998, helping the Huskies win the state title, and held the same position at Eastern Kentucky University in 1998-99.

"Annemarie has a great background as a player and coach," George said. "She was setter for very successful Pittsburgh teams and can bring some of those experiences to Western Michigan. She has the mindset of a winner. That's really important."

Mernagh replaces Colleen Farrell, who was named head volleyball coach at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. Farrell was a member of the Bronco staff for three seasons prior to accepting the position at ECU. WMU averaged 19 wins per season during Farrell's tenure on the staff.

Western Michigan posted a 25-7 overall record and a 15-3 Mid-American Conference mark last season. The Broncos advanced to the 1999 MAC Championship match for the first time in 10 years, falling 3-0 to Ball State.
