Men's basketball team falls at Toledo

Feb. 19, 2000

TOLEDO, Ohio -- Road woes continue for the WMU men's basketball team, which lost, 81-66, at Toledo on Saturday (Feb. 19). The loss halted a two-game winning streak for WMU. The Broncos defeated Toledo, 77-73, when the two teams met in Kalamazoo in January.

With the loss, the Broncos (10-15 overall, 6-10 MAC) are mathematically eliminated from winning the Mid-American Conference West Division title. More importantly, WMU has won only one road contest in eight attempts against MAC teams and must now face a first-round MAC tournament opponent on the road.

WMU senior Tony Barksdale led all players with 23 points at Toledo. He also had four rebounds and four assists. Classmate Rod Brown contributed 14 points and led the Broncos with seven rebounds. Thadus Williams was the only other Bronco in double-digit scoring. He had 10 points.

Western Michigan connected on just 38 percent of its shots from the field and 59 percent from the free throw line. Toledo also held a commanding, 48-36, advantage in rebounds.

The Broncos remain on the road for their second contest in a span of three days, when they travel to Eastern Michigan, Monday, Feb. 21. WMU completes the regular season at home on Saturday, Feb. 26, when they host Ball State beginning at 2 p.m. The Broncos will play in the first round of the MAC tournament on Wednesday, March 1, at an opponent to be determined.

Bronco men's basketball can be heard on the Bronco Radio Network (Flagship station WFAT-96.5 FM Kalamazoo), and via broadcast.com on the Bronco Web site <www.wmubroncos.com>.
