Women's basketball tournament pairings, media coverage

KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University's women's basketball team (17-10 overall, 14-2 MAC) enters the 2000 Mid-American Conference Tournament as the No. 2 seed. The Broncos thus earn a first-round bye and advance automatically to the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 2. The quarterfinals, semi-finals and championship game will all be played at Public Hall in Cleveland.

All games involving the Broncos will be available on Kalamazoo-area radio stations (see below). The semi-final and final rounds of the MAC tournament will be available on television in Ohio on Fox Sports Ohio. Several Kalamazoo area restaurants and sports bars are expected to show coverage via satellite of contests involving the Broncos. The games will not be carried on broadcast or cable television in Michigan.

March 2 quarterfinal game: WMU will play Bowling Green beginning at 6:30 p.m. Radio coverage begins at 6 p.m. on WQXC 100.9 FM, Otsego-Kalamazoo.

March 3 semi-final game: If WMU advances to the semi-finals, they would play either Toledo or Ball State beginning at 9 p.m. Radio coverage would begin at 8:30 p.m. on the Bronco Radio Network (Flagship station WFAT-96.5 FM Portage-Kalamazoo).

March 4 championship game: The MAC Tournament championship game begins at 5:45 p.m. If WMU advances to the championship game, radio coverage would begin at 5 p.m. on WQXC 100.9 FM, Otsego-Kalamazoo.

WMU could face one of four possible opponents in the championship game, including No. 1 seed Kent and No. 5 seed Eastern Michigan. Kent and Eastern Michigan were the only MAC teams to defeat the Broncos during the regular season. The Broncos were 14-2 in the conference, 7-1 at home and 7-1 on the road. Their 14 wins include a school-record nine-game conference winning streak.

In tournament first-round action on Monday, Feb. 28, Ball State defeated Central Michigan, 95-81; Bowling Green def. Ohio, 84-70; Miami def. Marshall, 79-64; Buffalo def. Akron, 72-55; and Eastern Michigan def. Northern Illinois, 67-65.
