Donewald relieved of coaching duties

March 6, 2000

KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University announced today the Bob Donewald has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the men's basketball team, effectively immediately.

Donewald will be reassigned within the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics as a special assistant to athletic director Kathy Beauregard. A search for Donewald's replacement will begin immediately.

"We appreciate Bob's many years of loyal service to this institution, but felt it was time for a change in the leadership of the men's basketball program," Beauregard said. "The university remains committed to fulfilling the terms of coach Donewald's contract."

Donewald's contract runs through June 30, 2003.

In 11 years, Donewald compiled a 151-155 record as men's basketball coach. His career mark is 359-276, spanning 22 seasons. Donewald's 1999-2000 Bronco team finished 10-18.

During Donewald's tenure at WMU, the Broncos posted two 21-win campaigns, including the 1997-98 squad, which defeated Clemson in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Under Donewald, the 1991-92 WMU team participated in the post-season National Invitational Tournament, losing to Notre Dame in the first round.
