April 24, 2000

KALAMAZOO -- The WMU softball Broncos secured a 2-1 victory over Ball State Saturday afternoon at the BSU Softball Complex in game two of the Mid-American Conference tripleheader. Three games were played after Friday's original contest was postponed due to rain.

Senior infielder Melissa Martens drove in both runs for the victory, including an RBI triple to right field.

WMU fell in the opener 6-3 and dropped the finale 8-0. The Broncos matched the Cardinals in hits through the first two games, but were out-hit 15-3 in the third contest.

In the first game, both teams had eight hits, but the Broncos managed only three runs, leaving nine runners on base. Center fielder Alaina Scott led WMU in the opener, going 2-for-3 from the plate, with one run and one RBI. Scott was also 2-for-3 in game 2, scoring one of the Broncos' two runs in the victory, and 1-for-2 in game 3.

The Broncos are 9-25 overall, 4-8 MAC. They travel to Northern Illinois on Tuesday, April 25, for a pair of games, then travel to Mt. Pleasant, Mich., for three contests at Central Michigan Friday and Saturday, April 28-29.
