Biological sciences awards honors and scholarships

KALAMAZOO -- Fourteen Western Michigan University students were honored for achievement this spring by the Department of Biological Sciences. The students received their awards at a luncheon in April.

Erin E. Albright of 33649 Wattles Road, Colon, Mich., received a $1,500 Hazel Wirick Scholarship for the fall 1999 semester.

Colleen M. Beckman of 3680 Dunecrest, Muskegon, Mich., was the recipient of the $1,500 Hazel Wirick Scholarship for the winter 2000 semester.

Jennifer R. Dekaaker of 7529 Hoffke Drive, Caledonia, Mich., was the recipient of the Margaret Thomas Du Mond Award which comes with a $500 cash award.

Mark J. Dzwik of 4210 E. Halbert Road, Battle Creek, Mich., was named Distinguished Pre Professional in Biological Sciences, which comes with a $150 cash award. He is a member of WMU's Lee Honors College.

Szi Fei Feng of 2000 Goldsworth, Apt. U1, Kalamazoo, was named the Distinguished Biology Graduate Student, a designation that comes with a $150 cash award. He also was the department nominee for a Graduate Research and Creative Scholar award for research at the master's level.

Kyle J. Gernhofer of 2204 Kewaunee Drive, Traverse City, Mich., was named Distinguished Senior in Biomedical Sciences, a designation that comes with a $150 cash award. He is a member of WMU's Lee Honors College.

John M. Landosky of 997 Richmond Court, Apt. 2D, Kalamazoo, was the department nominee for the Graduate Research and Creative Scholar award in teaching at the doctoral level.

Andrew A. Laucher of 12599 Pine Ridge Lane, Charlevoix, Mich., was named the Presidential Scholar in Biological Sciences and received a $150 cash award.

Pamela Laureto of 365 Rosewood SE, Grand Rapids, Mich., received the Leo C. Vander Beek Graduate Student Plant Biology Award.

Rebecca A. Moore of 26242 Kiltarton St., Farmington, Mich., received the $500 William Follis M.D. Scholarship for both fall 1999 and winter 2000 semesters. She is a member of WMU's Lee Honors College.

Raquel Pontes of 923 Egleston Ave., Kalamazoo, received the $150 Merrill Wiseman Award in Microbiology.

John E. Pool of 3628 Quadrille Lane, Holt, Mich., was named Distinguished Senior in Biology, a designation that comes with a $150 cash award. He is a member of WMU's Lee Honors College.

Takeshi Shimamura of 4757 Wimbleton Way, Kalamazoo, was named Distinguished Biomedical Sciences Graduate Student, a designation that comes with a $150 cash award, and also was the department nominee for a Graduate Research and Creative Scholar award for research at the doctoral level.

Thomas L. Wilson of 1432 Concord Place Drive Apt. 3D, Kalamazoo, was nominated by the department for the Graduate Research and Creative Scholar award in teaching at the master's degree level.
