Baseball's Seestadt earns GTE Academic Award

May 11, 2000

KALAMAZOO -- Senior Joe Seestadt (West Bloomfield, Mich.) has been named to the GTE/CoSIDA Academic District IV team.

Western Michigan University's Seestadt was one of 11 athletes in GTE District IV to be named to the team. He has a 3.26 GPA as an industrial engineering major. Universities from Ohio, Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, and Michigan make up District IV. Seestadt is now eligible for GTE Academic All-America status. That team will be announced June 6.

A catcher, Seestadt has played in 46 of 48 games for Western Michigan. He is currently hitting .363 with five home runs and 43 RBI for the Broncos. Seestadt ranks second the team in RBI, slugging percentage (.555), and doubles (13). He has surpassed his career offensive totals in runs, hits, RBI, and home runs this season.

"Joe has really worked hard in the weight room and on his basic hitting technique," Bronco head coach Fred Decker said. "He's stuck with it consistently and has had a good year. He's a good student and works hard as an engineering major. Joe has done a wonderful job as a student-athlete."

Western Michigan is currently 24-24 overall, 9-15 in the Mid-American Conference. WMU hosts the University of Toledo in a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday (May 13) and Sunday (May 14) at Hyames Field. Both twinbills begin at 1 p.m.
