Hockey Broncos announce 2000-01 schedule

May 23, 2000

KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University has released its hockey schedule for the 2000-01 season, which marks the 28th year of varsity competition. The Broncos will play 36 regular season games, including 28 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA).

Preseason activities include the Brown & Gold intrasquad game on Sept. 29 and an exhibition against the University of Waterloo Oct. 6 in Lawson Arena.

The Broncos open their regular season 3,600 miles from home, traveling to the University of Alaska-Fairbanks for a two game CCHA series on Oct. 13-14.

Western Michigan's home opener is the following weekend, Oct. 20-21, when the University of Alabama-Huntsville appears at Lawson Arena for the first time.

WMU's home schedule is highlighted by visits from Ohio State University (Dec. 8-9), the University of Notre Dame (Jan. 13, March 2), the University of Michigan (Jan. 20) and Michigan State University (Feb. 17).

In keeping with the CCHA scheduling format adopted last season, Western Michigan plays four games (two home, two away) against schools in its scheduling cluster (Miami University, Notre Dame, Ohio State) while facing the remaining eight CCHA opponents twice, either on the road or at home.

For the first time in four years, the Broncos will travel to a holiday tournament, taking part in the Silverado Shootout hosted by the University of Minnesota-Duluth on Dec. 28-29. The tournament field includes host UMD, WMU, Colgate and Merrimack.

"I'm excited about having all the Big Ten schools in the CCHA, along with Notre Dame, playing in our facility," says head coach Jim Culhane, whose team did not have the opportunity to host Notre Dame, Ohio State or Michigan last year. "Along with our traditional rivals, our fans will have a chance to see an emerging program in Alabama-Huntsville along with Dartmouth of the ECAC."

All home games will be played at Lawson Ice Arena, starting at 7:05 p.m. Ticket information is available at toll free 888-4-WMU-TIX.
