Music grad is Fulbright Scholar in PhillippinesNov. 10, 2000 KALAMAZOO -- Gary Powell Nash, a graduate of WMU's School of Music is spending the 2000-01 academic year as a U.S. Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor/ Lecturer at the University of the Philippines- Diliman. Powell received a Master of Music degree in composition from Western Michigan University in 1989. While in the Phillippines, he is teaching classes in orchestration, conducting composition seminars, and teaching seven composition major students. He has also done lectures and presentations at nearby institutions, as well as at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. In January 2001, the University of the Philippines will present a recital of Powell's compositions. Powell has been an assistant professor of music at Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena for the past five years.
