Sabbatical leaves granted to 33 faculty members

KALAMAZOO -- A total of 33 Western Michigan University faculty members were granted sabbatical leaves Dec. 8 by the WMU Board of Trustees. In addition, trustees granted an administrative leave to Dr. Daniel J. Farrell, chairperson of the Department of Management, effective Aug. 6, 2001, through Dec. 9, 2001.

Granted sabbatical leaves for the entire 2001-02 academic year were: Dr. Sisay Asefa, professor of economics; Dr. Kuriakose K. Athappilly, professor of business information systems; Dr. Steven B. Bertman, associate professor of chemistry; Dr. David A. Burnie, professor of finance and commercial law; Dr. Clement Burns, associate professor of physics; Stuart J. Dybek, professor of English; Dr. John W. Gesink, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering; Dr. Janos L. Grantner, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering; Dr. Diane B. Hamilton, associate professor of nursing; Dr. Carolyn J. Harris, professor of foreign languages and literatures; Tricia Hennessy, professor of art; Dr. Jil C. Larson, assistant professor of English; Dr. Molly Lynde-Recchia, associate professor of foreign languages and literatures; Dr. Larry A. Mallak, associate professor of industrial and manufacturing engineering; Dr. Regena Fails Nelson, associate professor of teaching, learning and leadership; Dr. Lisa Paulius, associate professor of physics; Dr. Neil A. Pinney, associate professor of political science; Dr. Jocelyn D. Steinke, associate professor of English; Dr. Grace C. Tiffany, associate professor of English; Dr. Laura R. Van Zoest, associate professor of mathematics and statistics; and Dr. Qiji Zhu, associate professor of mathematics and statistics.

Sabbatical leaves for these faculty members also were approved: Curtis Curtis-Smith, professor of music, for fall 2001 and fall 2002; William H. Fenn, associate professor of physician assistant, for fall 2001 and fall 2002; Sharon L. Garber, associate professor of dance, for fall 2001; Dr. Duane R. Hampton, associate professor of geosciences, for fall 2001; Dr. Chansheng He, associate professor of geography, for winter 2002; Arthur W. Hoadley, professor of mechanical and aeronautical engineering, for fall 2001; Dr. Paul A. Johnston, professor of English, for fall 2001; Renata Artman Knific, professor of music, for winter 2002; Thomas Knific, professor of music, for winter 2002; Dr. Maija Petersons, professor of family and consumer sciences, for fall 2001; Dr. Mark S. Richardson, associate professor of English, for fall 2001; and Dr. Galen E. Rike, associate professor of University libraries, for spring and summer 2001.
