WMU community and new legislators to meetFeb. 9, 2001 KALAMAZOO -- Members of the University community are invited to join President Elson S. Floyd for a reception Monday, Feb. 19, to honor two new Michigan legislators who represent Kalamazoo County. State Reps. Tom George and Alexander Lipsey will be honored at the event, which is set for 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Fetzer Center Ballroom. A short program will begin at 5:30 p.m. and feature remarks by Floyd, George and Lipsey as well as Rep. Jerry VanderRoest and Sen. Dale Shugars. A representative from U.S. Rep. Fred Upton's office also will speak briefly. George represents the 61st District, which includes the city of Portage and Kalamazoo, Texas, Oshtemo, Alamo, Cooper and Richland townships. His committee assignments in the House of Representatives are for the Criminal Justice, Health Policy and Transportation committees. Lipsey represents the 60th District, which covers the city of Kalamazoo. He serves on the Civil Law and the Judiciary, Commerce, and House Oversight and Operations committees. Faculty, staff, students and area alumni are encouraged to attend. Those planning to be present are asked to call 387-3607 to make a reservation. Hors d'oeuvres and light refreshments will be served.
