Students complete ROTC training programsAug. 27, 2001 KALAMAZOO -- Seventeen Western Michigan University students recently completed U.S. Army ROTC programs. Part of the Haworth College of Business, WMU's Military Science Program is an elective academic minor through which students can qualify for the Reserve Officers Training Corps. The program stresses leadership and military skills training that prepares students for commissions as second lieutenants in the active Army, Army Reserves or Army National Guard after they complete their baccalaureate degrees. ROTC programs train 70 percent of the officers in today's Army. Ryan Briggs of Dexter, Mich., a 1998 graduate of Dexter High School, recently graduated from the U.S. Army ROTC Advanced Camp at Fort Lewis, Wash. Briggs, a senior, is a university curriculum major and the son of Theresa and Gregory Briggs. A.J. Brong of Boyne City, Mich., a 1999 graduate of Boyne City High School, recently graduated from the U.S. Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, Ga. Brong, a junior, is a university curriculum major and the son of Arthur and Marilyn Brong. Johann Hindert of Terrace Park, Ohio, a 1999 graduate of Cincinnati Country Day High School, recently graduated from the U.S. Army ROTC Basic Camp at Fort Knox, Ky., and was awarded a $35,000 U.S. Army Scholarship. Hindert, a junior, is an international studies major at Kalamazoo College who is enrolled as a guest student in WMU's ROTC program. His parents are Patrick and Louise Hindert. Alixandra Hyslop of Brighton, Mich., a 1999 graduate of Howell High School, recently graduated from the U.S. Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, Ga. Hyslop, a junior, is a recreation science major and the daughter of Carl Hyslop and Mary Hyslop-Heller. Maria Magdaleno of Covert, Mich., recently graduated from the U.S. Army ROTC Basic Camp at Fort Knox, Ky., and was awarded a $42,000 Michigan National Guard Scholarship. Magdaleno, a junior, is an elementary education major and the daughter of Aurelio and Martha Magdaleno. Brian Mandock of Burton, Mich., a 1999 graduate of Bentley High School, recently graduated from the U.S. Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, Ga. Mandock, a junior, is a pre-psychology major and the son of Terry and Christine Mandock. Clarence Matthews Jr. of Fort Drum, N.Y., a 1998 graduate of Domestic High School, recently graduated from the U.S. Army ROTC Advanced Camp at Fort Lewis, Wash., and completed Cadet Training/Leadership Training at Fort Bragg, N.C. Matthews, a senior, is construction engineering management major and the son of Susan and Clarence Matthews Sr. Beau Nelson of Petoskey, Mich., a 1999 graduate of Petoskey High School, recently graduated from the U.S. Army ROTC Basic Camp at Fort Knox, Ky., and was awarded a $35,000 U.S. Army Scholarship. Nelson, a junior, is a university curriculum major and the son of Daniel and Cindy Nelson. Peter Newman of Sturgis, Mich., a 1998 graduate of Sturgis High School, recently graduated from the U.S. Army ROTC Advanced Camp at Fort Lewis, Wash. Newman, a senior, is a criminal justice major and the son of Jay and Barbara Newman. John Oros of Kalamazoo, a 1998 graduate of Portage Central High School, recently graduated from the U.S. Army ROTC Advanced Camp at Fort Lewis, Wash. Oros, a senior, is a finance major and the son of John and Terri Oros. Kathryn Pinter of Litchfield, Mich., a 1998 graduate of Litchfield Community School, recently graduated from the U.S. Army ROTC Advanced Camp at Fort Lewis, Wash. Pinter, a senior, is an education major. Aaron Render of Brighton, Mich., a 1999 graduate of Brighton High School, recently graduated from the U.S. Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, Ga. Render, a junior, is a criminal justice major and the son of Arnold and Janet Render. Joseph Rozycki of Fremont, Mich., a 1999 graduate of Fremont High School, recently graduated from the U.S. Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, Ga. Rozycki, a junior, is an aviation flight science major and the son of James and Michelle Rozycki. Valerie Scott of Louisville, Ohio, a 1999 graduate of Marine City High School, recently graduated from the U.S. Army ROTC Basic Camp at Fort Knox, Ky., and was awarded a $42,000 Michigan National Guard Scholarship. Scott, a junior, is a biomedical sciences major and the daughter of Greggory and Brenda Scott. Melissa Scripter of Kalamazoo, a 1998 graduate of Maple Valley High School, recently graduated from the U.S. Army ROTC Advanced Camp at Fort Lewis, Wash., and is currently attending the U.S. Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, Ga. Scripter is a senior majoring in business. Amber Take of Kalamazoo, a 2000 graduate of Portage Central High School, recently graduated from the U.S. Army ROTC Basic Camp at Fort Knox, Ky., and was awarded a $42,000 Michigan National Guard Scholarship. Take, a junior, is a biomedical sciences major. Andrew Till of Kalamazoo, a 1998 graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, recently graduated from the U.S. Army ROTC Advanced Camp at Fort Lewis, Wash., and Cadet Training/Leadership Training in the Republic of Korea.
