Trombonist and guest artist performs Sept. 17Sept. 12, 2001 KALAMAZOO -- The WMU School of Music hosts a guest artist and trombonist William Mathis on Monday, Sept. 17, in a recital in the Dalton Center Recital Hall beginning at 8 p.m. Admission is free and the public is invited. Dr. Mathis is an assistant professor in the College of Music at Bowling Green State University and principal trombone with the Firelands Symphony Orchestra. He is also a member of the LATEX Trombone Quartet, an ensemble comprised of university professors specializing in consort instrumentation. Other chamber music experiences include performances with the Canadian Brass, the Festival at Sandpoint, Keystone and Rafael Mendez Brass Institutes, International Brassfest, International Trombone Festival, New York Brass Conference, and state music education conventions in Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana. As a soloist Dr. Mathis has performed at the Festival of Sandpoint, Midwest Suzuki Workshop, and Mississippi Music Teachers Association State Convention. His recital at WMU includes an arrangement of a Tomaso Albinoni concerto, Gerald Finzi's Five Bagatelles, and works by contemporary composers Juraj Filas, Steven Paxton, and Eric Ewazen.
