Swartz and O'Flaherty assume expanded rolesOct. 29, 2001 KALAMAZOO -- Acting at their Oct. 26 meeting, the WMU Board of Trustees approved the appointments of Dr. Diane K. Swartz as interim vice president for student affairs and Susan O'Flaherty to the new position of executive director of student services. Swartz was named interim vice president effective Oct. 17. She will assume the position held by Dr. Theresa Powell, whose one-year professional administrative leave also was approved at the Oct. 26 trustee meeting. O'Flaherty's appointment was effective Aug. 6. In addition, the board approved the previously announced appointments of Paul DeVries, director of compliance in the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics, and Kelly Lycan, head coach of women's track in the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics. Diane K. Swartz has served as dean of students since 1993. She came to WMU from Virginia's Lynchburg College, where she served first as assistant dean of student affairs and then associate dean of student affairs. She also had held student affairs positions at Wheaton College, Michigan State University, Southern Methodist University and the University of Maryland at College Park. She earned a bachelor's degree at Wheaton in 1978, a master's degree in college student personnel administration from MSU in 1980 and a doctoral degree in the same area from the University of Maryland in 1991. Susan O'Flaherty has served as director of student financial aid and scholarships at WMU since 1996. In her new position, she will add oversight of the Registrar's Office to her duties. She came to WMU from the University of Colorado at Boulder, where she served as acting director of financial aid. She also served as associate director of financial aid there and has held positions in financial aid administration at universities in California, New York and Connecticut. O'Flaherty earned a bachelor's degree in history from Adelphi University and a master's degree in guidance and counseling from the Cal Poly State University in 1981.
