Gary Fund surpasses goal, raises record totalJune 24, 2002 KALAMAZOO -- The 2002 Mike Gary Athletic Fund atWestern Michigan University reached a record total, surpassing the $730,000 goal and raising $758,655 in gifts and pledges. The total represents a 5 percent increase over the $725,854 raised in 2001. "The volunteers worked extremely hard throughout the campaign," said Jerry George, director of development for athletics. "Our success wouldn't be possible without their highly dedicated efforts." A telephone campaign kicked off the drive, with a group of approximately 40 volunteers soliciting phone contributions from April 22 through May 16. The drive, in its 48th year, will officially end June 30. Jon Dixon, retired vice president of Bronson Healthcare Group, is the campaign chair. "This year the Gary Fund met a very aggressive goal," Dixon said. "It was made possible because of the dedication and hard work of the volunteers. They have done a good job in broadening the network associated with the university." Chair-elect for the 2003 campaign is Charlie Miller, a retired State Farm Agent and long time Gary Fund volunteer. Captains for the volunteer groups include Jim McIntyre, Lou White, Gary Gunia, Jim Everts, Jim Lamborn, Larry Lueth and Fred Sitkins.
