Sunseeker regains fifth place

KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University's Sunseeker recaptured fifth place in the American Solar Challenge Monday, July 21, and finished the day in Barstow, Calif.

The WMU team and the rest of the race leaders will await the remaining cars in the 20-car field and stay in Barstow until 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, when the final 91-mile leg of the 2,300 mile race will begin.

Sunseeker covered nearly 400 miles on Monday, traveling at an average speed of 46 mph. The WMU car was second, behind race leader Missouri-Rolla, through the Kingman, Ariz., checkpoint, and finished the day in Barstow, the final checkpoint in the race before the finishline.

After the race, West Michigan residents will be able to see Sunseeker and meet members of the WMU team Aug. 2 and 3 at the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, Mich.

To follow the July 13-23 race as it unfolds, go to the ASC Web site at <www.formulasun.org/asc>. The site includes a map of the route with information about stops and the location of the race leader. A daily update link carries information about the last know location of each team and discloses current standings, miles completed and time elapsed.
