Ohio University musicians offer free recital

KALAMAZOO-Two Ohio University faculty members, trombonist Chris Hayes and tubist Jason Smith, will present a concert at 8:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, in the Dalton Center Recital Hall at Western Michigan University. The performance is free and open to the public.

Hayes serves as an active clinician, adjudicator, and performer throughout the region, and is an educational clinician for United Musical Instruments. In addition to his regional activities, Hayes has performed at national and international events including the Newport Music Festival, Music Educator's National Conference, International Trumpet Guild Conference, and International Trombone Association Conference. He has also published a number of articles on band, trombone, and music education in state journals, and presented research at the 1996 and 1998 Music Educator's National Conferences in Kansas City, Mo., and Phoenix, as well as the 1999 College Band Directors National Conference in Austin, Texas.

Smith has made guest artist appearances at the International Tuba-Euphonium Conference held in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada; the World Saxophone Congress in Montreal, Canada; the National Flute Symposium in Columbus, Ohio; and most recently at Fairmont State University, University of Kansas, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music. Additional performances include a live studio broadcast on Classical Public Radio WGUC and many solo competitions, including the 1997 and 1998 International Tuba-Euphonium Conference Competitions, the 1997 and 1998 Leonard Falcone Competitions and the 1998 Colonial Euphonium-Tuba Institute Competition. While pursuing graduate studies at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, he recorded as a member of the Cincinnati Philharmonic Orchestra and the Cincinnati Wind Symphony, and has also performed as a member of the Opera Theatre Orchestra of Lucca, Italy. He is currently Editor of the International Tuba- Euphonium Association Journal.
