Sindecuse sets spring 2004 program schedule

KALAMAZOO--The Sindecuse Health Center is presenting several health-related programs during spring semester that are open to all Western Michigan University faculty and staff members.

A free workshop called "Sports Nutrition" will be offered in 1240 SHC from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9. The workshop, which is specifically for active individuals, will inform participants about the current recommendations for competitive and recreational athletes. It will be led by Gretchen Kauth, SHC registered dietitian. Advance registration is required.

A $35 CPR certification course is being offered to faculty, staff and students. The American Heart Association course covers adult, infant and child CPR and choking. Those who successfully complete one of the four-hour course sessions will be certified for two years. Sessions have been scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. in the SHC on the following dates: Tuesday, Feb. 10, Room 3250; Thursday, Feb. 12, Room 3250; Wednesday, March 10, Room 3111; and Thursday, March 11, Room 3250. Prior to attending participants must register, pay the $35 fee and read a CPR manual.

A free workshop called "What Is Normal Eating?" will be offered in 1240 SHC from 1 to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 18. The workshop will examine the signs and symptoms of dysfunctional eating and ways to move back toward normal eating habits. It will be led by Gretchen Kauth and Lori Yelton, SHC registered dietitians. Advance registration is required.

A free workshop called "Asthma Wellness" will be offered in 1240 SHC from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, March 11. The workshop will address how to recognize early signs of asthma, develop an asthma management plan and maintain healthy levels of physical activity. It will be led by Cary Buzzell, SHC registered nurse. Advance registration is required.

A free workshop called the "Varied Vegetarian" will be offered in 1240 SHC from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, March 15. The workshop will explain the health benefits of vegetarian foods and how to add more soy to food selections. Soy products contain nutrients and substances believed to contribute to better heart health, reduce the risk of developing certain cancers and decrease symptoms of menopause. Sample recipes will be available to taste. The program will be led by Gretchen Kauth and Lori Yelton, SHC registered dietitians. Advance registration is required.

A free workshop called "Is Diet a Four-Letter Word?" will be offered in 1240 SHC from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 16. The workshop will address popular diets and how they compare with current weight loss recommendations. It will be led by Lori Yelton, SHC registered dietitian. Advance registration is required.

A free workshop called "Intro to Meditation" will be offered in 205 Bernhard Center from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. on the following Tuesdays: March 16, March 23, March 30, April 6 and April 13. This five-session workshop will provide an experiential introduction to two basic mediation techniques, draw heavily on Eastern thought and tradition, and strongly emphasize self-acceptance and the acknowledgement of the sacred in everyday life. Participants are expected to commit to attend all five sessions. The workshop will be co-led by Frank Jamison, professor emeritus of instructional media. Advance registration is required.

A free workshop called "Breaking Free" will be offered in 1240 SHC from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, March 18. The workshop will address how occasional tobacco use can easily turn into a habit--and how to break this habit. It will be led by Cary Buzzell, SHC registered nurse. Advance registration is required.

A free class called "Better Bones, Brighter Futures" will be offered in 1240 SHC from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 23. This nutrition class focuses on the prevention, detection and treatment of osteoporosis and will examine factors that increase the risk of developing this bone-thinning disease, such as dietary deficiencies, lack of exercise, smoking, alcohol, family history and use of certain medications. It will be led by Gretchen Kauth, SHC registered dietitian.

A free workshop called "You Are What You Eat (or drink)" will be offered in 1240 SHC from 11 a.m. to noon. Thursday, March 25. The workshop will help participants assess their eating and drinking habits and inform them how to improve their health through good nutrition. It will be led by Gretchen Kauth, SHC registered dietitian. Advance registration is required.

A free workshop called "Understanding and Managing Depression" will be offered in the SHC (room TBA) from 5:15 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 8. The workshop will discuss the causes of depression as well as how depression can be managed and treated and will help participants to recognize symptoms of depression in themselves or others. It will be led by Elaine Phillips, professor in the University Counseling and Testing Center. Advance registration is required.
